ATTEMPTED MURDER Ob' O'DONOVAN BOSSA. THE HANLAN-CLIFFORD SCULLING MATCH. THE SOUDAN RELIEF EXPEDITION. New York, February 3. O'Donovan Rossa was to-day shot at and wonnded in the streets of this city by an Englishwoman. The latter was at once arrested, and is detained in custody. The assailant of O’Donovan Rossa is a hospital nmse named Dudley. It is sup posed that her act was prompted by indignation at the recent action of the dynamiters in London. Her sanity is doubted in some quarters. Roisa’s wound is not a fatal one. London, February 2. Gilbert, the Irish-American, who was arrested on snspicion of being concerned in the dynamite outrage at the Tower ou the 24th ult., was to-day re-examined at Bowstreet Police Court. The evidence adduced showed that the prisoner had been in the habit 0/ frequenting the Tower, and that be bad in bis possession a loaded detonator. The inquiry was further adjourned. f1.8.H. the Prince of Wales has gone on a visit to Cannes, in the south of France. February 4. The case of O'Donovan Rossa is considered hopeless. Rossa asserts that the woman had complained to him that the recent dynamite explosions in England had proved harmless, she desiring that people should be tided, and for the furtherance of this object offered him her purse. February 5, Tallow—Australian average quality beef, 34s 6d ; mutton, 355.

Wool—At yesterday’s auction prices were firmly maintained. 9SOO bales were submitted. To-day the sale showed a hardening tendency. Tee catalogue comprised 11.900 bales. The Chinese outworks at Keluug have been captured by the French, with a loss of II killed and 53 wonnded. Mrs Dudley, the woman who shot O'Donovan Rossa, is regarded as a heroine in the United States. Up to the present Bossa's medical attendants have been unable to extract the bnllet. A man has been arrested who is believed to be implicated with Gilbert, now in custody in connection with the dynamite outrages at the Tower. Buakim, February 3. A force consisting of SO British Hnssars and some Egyptian troops, which was despatched hence to Handonb to bntn it down, had effected its purpose and was returning to Bnakim, when it was surrounded by a large body of rebels. Heavy fighting ensned, bnt the Hussars and Egyptians succeeded in effecting their escape, with a loss of eight men killed, five of whom were Hussars. Svdnev, February 4. Hanlan and Clifford are doing good training work for the sculling match, which takes place between them on Saturday next. Both men have done excellent trials and both are in good condition. The betting is 2to 1 on Hanlan. Melbourne, February 3, The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports of the local grain markets as follows :—Shipping wheat, 3s 6d to 3a 7d. The market is depiessed. Malting barley quiet at 4s to 4s 9d. New Zealand feeding oats, better demand for all descriptions. 2s 8d to 3s 2d ; milling sorts firmer, at 3s Sd to S3 5d ; New Zealand oats, under bond, 2s 6d to 2s 9d ; they are slow of sale at these prices.
