The New Year.
The year 1884 which has just passed away, has been marked by considerable progress in this colony. Settlement has steadily progressed and population increased. Trade has become sounder, and healthier, and there are indications of a gradual return of prosperity. The North Island is to be opened up by railways, and as the native difficulty has almost entirely disappeared, the time is not remote when the settlement of the interior by industrious and enterprising European population will go on, first gradually, and then by immense leapsand bounds. We may therefore begin the new year in a spirit of confidence and hope with respect to the future. As to the present the people of this colony have much to he thankful for. With a splendid climate, a fertile soil, an immense area of land awaiting occupation and cultivation, and enormous latent resources of every kind only needing the application of capital and labor for their development, the future of this colony must be a bright and prosperous one.
