In its issue this morning, the Daily Telegraph states that Commodore Erskine, commanding the Australian squadron, has been instructed to hoist the British flag on the Louisadc Archipelago, the Woodlark Islands, Long Island, and Rook Islands, if foreign warships tbreaten annexation in the vicinity of these groups. December 31. The betrothal is announced of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice to Prince Henry of Battenburg. San Francisco, December 29. Arrived, yesterday—Steamship City of Sydney, with the inward mails, dated Auckland, 9th December. Cairo, December 29. Telegrams from Korti state that a strong detachment of infantry under General Earles will shortly advance against the Arabs near Meraweh, to punish them for the murder of Colonel Stewart at Wadet-Hhomar. The expedition will advance towards Khartoum as soon as supplies have reached Gakdul, but a strong garrison will remain at Korti. Melbourne, December 30.
Monsignor Luck, Eoman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, has arrived here by the Messageries Company’s steamer Yarra (19th November), en route for Auckland.
