MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the Board waa held on Batorday last. Present: Messrs Bennstt (Chairman), Rutherford, Buchanan, Donrt, and Chalmers. The minutes of the previous meeting wam read and confirmed. The following correspondence waa alao read:— Letter from Secretary to the Treasury relative to subsidy voted by Wainrapa donnty West. One from Under- Secretary for Public Works as to the services of an assistant engineer. One from Castle Point Board anclosing cheque for £lO aa part payment of grant voted to assist in repairing the Upper Tauem road. One from J. McKenna stating that a culvert near the Wangahn bridge waa in a very dangerous state, ana requesting that something might be done to it immediately. One from G. Summer stating that he was prepared to pay £3O towards the expense of the formation of the road from the Kaiwhata river to his place. One from Messrs Thompson, Wardell, Colway, and others, requesting that something might be dene to improve the road from the main !■«* to the Ruamahnnga River through the Lower Manaia. One from J. King tendering hie resignation as engineer to the Board. One from J. Bobieson enclosing account, The following tenders for sight chains of formation at Spring Bank were received C. R. Bennington £46. W. Catt £46, W. Budd £56, B. Greatbaad £7 par «iul £49105.

Mr Cave waited on the Board and ataled that ha had aeen several of the natives at Te Ora On who informed him that they wen willing to allow a line of road to be laid off through their property there. The following resolutions wen then parsed That the Secretary acknowledge receipt of £lO sent by the Castle Point Board to aaaiat in repairing the Upper Tenant road. That Mr Kobieson’s account stand over till tha Chairman retnrna. That Mr MeKansis be instructed to get a new culvert erected near the Wangahu bridge in place of the one broken down. That Mr Kammer be in* formed that so soon as the plan and spMidcations can be prepared for tLe improvements required near his place tenders will be invited for the work, but that it will ba naeaasary for him to pay to the Board tha am promised before they an commenced. That the Secretary inform the Mayor of tha Borough that a letter had bean received from Mr T. H. Murray calling the Board’s attention to the state of the road from the Boamahunga to the Makora road, and also one from Messrs Warded, Colway, Thompson, ■ and others as to improvements required on tha road from the main line to the through the Lower tod mnmslili[ that something might be done toimprove them; and at the —.metiww inform him that as these roads are the boundaries Imlimeii the Municipal and Highway Districts the Board expect the Borough Council to be at half the expense of carrying out the works required. That tenders be invited for repairing the road leading to Matf hiwi, and that the Secretary write to Messrs Holmes, and inform them that tha Board before next meeting will expeet payment of the £l5O promised by them. That the Board agree to give a grant of £SO, sum promised by Mr Buchanan to the Taratahi-Corterton Board to aaaiat in improving Frances’ road. That the saereUry write to the Colonial Treasurer, and inform him that the repairs on the Upper Tsaem road will shortly bo completed, and aek for payment of the sum of £3OO promised by Government to assist in the work. That Mr J. A. Rutherford be authorised to get certain repairs made on the Alfredtoa lino of road. That applications from properly qualified persons be invited for the office of Engineer to the Board to be given in on or beftm 11 o’clock aSn. of Saturday tha 3rd day of November next. That of giving advertisements and printing to both local papers t at the same time, all printing and advertising be done by each one alternately for tha period of one month. That C. B.
