LOCAL NEWS.
Geeytown Road Board.— The Board met on Saturday at the Court-house, at two o'clock, when a letter was read from the Superintendent, in which it was stated that the Underhill rOad havingbeeri commenced and the work undertaken, it was too late for the suggestion of the Board to be carried out. The Board authorised the Secretary to inform the Government, in reply that they declined to have anything more to do with the road, and to send all papers to the Government, so that if it desired to go on with the work it might do so on its own responsibility. The tenders for the works advertised for were their opened when Mr Humphries contract for the road known as Humphries’’ was accepted at the rate of £3 TBs per chain.’ W. Ricknell obtained the contract for the road known as Tocker’s at £l Is; IH. Udy Jun., for forming and metalling No 2 line £119; John Udy for No 1 line £3 19s 6d per chain. The unaccepted tenders were Thomas Braggins £4 for No 1 line; John Hawke £3 for No 2 line ; and Thomas Braggins for the same £3 7s.
Pigeon Match. —We would remind those of our readers who delight in Pigeon Shooting of the match advertised to take place at Mr Rowe’s Tauherenikau, on Tuesday next, after the arrival of the coach from Wellington.
The Featherston Road Board.— This Board met on Wednesday, when it was agreed to call for tenders for the Road known as Donald’s, an advertisement for which appears in our columns thia morning. An application was made by Mr Wilkinson to have the Western Lake Block excluded from the Featherston Board, which proposition was not acceded to.
Tae Teeegsafh OmcE. —We learn that the Greytown local trustees have agreed to band over the acre on which the Court-house is built to the General Government for the sum of £lO.
New Years Sports and Races at Mastkston— Last week we colled attention to the fact of the usual sports being held at Greytown on Boxing-day. We find from an advertisement received from Mr Tuck our friends at Masterton will not be behind the rest of the townships at the forthcoming festive season and that on New Year’s-day we may all expect to find a first-rate days entertainment amongst our friends there. Certificated! nterspretebs.— Mr E.Maunsell has obtained his certificate under the new Act. We have not as yet received a copy of this Act, but we advise those who engage interpreters to be careful who they employ, as it has tended by the employment of incompetent and unauthorised persons not only to delay negotiations, but in softie instances to our own knowledge, the loss of money to no small amount.
The Moroa Road Board. — Board met at the School-house, Moroa last Friday week in the evening, when it was resolved to rate all the 50 acre sections and those atoning the roads at 6d per acre and the hick portion of the district at 2d. The map of the district not having been then received; * the 'Chairman was authorised to write for it. T}ic Taratohi Sbard has at -last ■ theirs, but thb numerous boards now forming and formed seem to have noti-plu^ied u thie hard winding Provincial Officials at Wellington. The Wextheel— THe ’Cbachmah infelms us that last Thursday it rained hard, the whole way frbnf Wellington to Mr Abbott’s. In the Wajrarapa on that day we escaped the ‘Tain, but the weather was warm and sultry, and our friends the mosquitoes and sandflies were legion.
Wesleyan Conference.— At a conference /of the Wesleyan Ministers of the North New ■ Zealand District, recently held in Auckland, the erection of-a church in Wellington was sanctioned, provided the total debt on t’»e trust .estate, including church, manse, su'd = ech-.'.d, itm fining at the completion of the works, do cot exceed £ 1,000. 'i’h? erection • of anjanse at Wanganui, and one at Grey town, was als) so approved,-with suitable precautions. A enaversat-aa took place on the extension of the werk and the increase of the.number of ministers, and it was resolved, with a view to economy in time and money, ana to secure the co-operation of a lar:,e number of Jay friends, to constitute a new district in Wellington and the other provinces about Cook’s oirails, with an annual conference an; 1 , chairman, to be called the New Zealand Central-District. A proposal from the people in the Wairarapa, to prepare a manse and provide lor a married minister before the time required by the connexional rule, was spoken of with approbation, and record was made accordingly.
The Wairarapa Cavalry Volunteers. — The second divirion of this company meet for drill to-day, and we understand will immediately , proceed afterwards to the election of a Cornet, and non-commissioned officers.
The Public Hall. —A meeting of the Committee was held on Monday evening at Mr Fuller’s when in the absence of the Chairman, Mr E. Grigg occupied the chair, it was resolved to call for plans in the “Mercury” £5 to be given to the one approved of The Committee also agreed to purchase the land offered by the Small Farm Association, and so as to be able to discuss future plans to meet at the “Mercury” office every Monday evening.
