GENERAL GOVERNMENT PRIZE FIRING.

The following’ is the result of the trial prize firing in this district. We notice that Mr Gundy has not been beaten, and as the Wairarapa representative we hope Hie may be as successful in Wellington as he has been here.

FEATHERSTOS.

THE DEBTS OF THIS PROVINCE.

From the Wanganui Times.

In our last issue we quoted the debts of this province, from the statistics of New Zealand for 1865, at -£95,000 and then asked our readers to bear in mind that “ within the last fifteen months some ot the provinces have added to their liabilities.” The ‘ Chronicle,’ in commenting upon that says:—“ The truth is that the debt of this province is £125,000, to which sum must now be added the Manawatu loan of £30,000, making, instead of £95,000 not less than £155,000 —not less certainly, for there is also a further sum of £25,000 borrowed on the land to be reclaimed from the sea, making a total of £IBO,OOO, or neaaly double Mr. Taylor’s misleading or ignorant statement.”

We first take the item of £125,000 from which the 1 Chronicle ’ is careful not to deduct the proportion due by the province of Hawke’s

Bay, which at the lowest computation must be £30,000, leaving the debt of this province £95,000 as set down in the authority which we quoted. Since then £25,000 has been borrowed and paid for the Manawatu block, but will any man be able to mislead the public by calling that a debt ? Will not that block of land realize at least £200,000 ? Is that what our equivocating contemporary would make his readers believe—adding to the debt of the province ? Would it not rather pay off the whole £95,000 and leave us £IOO,OOO better off than before the land was purchased. If the £25,000 borrowed to pay for the Manawatu be set down to one side of the account, surely the value of the land purchased must be set down at the other, and is there a man amongst us who would value that under £200,000 ? The same argument applies exactly to the reclaimed land. If for £25,000 we ‘can reclaim £60,000 w T orth of land, does that add to the debt of the province ? How long will the public, or any fractional portion of it countenance the barefaced statements made from time to time by the ‘ Chronicle ?’
