DEVALUATION

GOLD CONTENT OF FRANC. M. Laval, Premier of France, says he will not devaluate to please the bankers. What he means is that he will not lower the gold content of the franc froni its present standard of fineness and weight, as did President Roosevelt with the United States dollar, making it worth 59.06 per cent, of its former value. Thus, if the devaluation of the franc was 25 per cent, it would mean that 100 francs gold would become 125 francs gold. This devaluation of the franc would have the same effect as inflation.
