FINAL WAITOMO FIGURES

MR BROADFOOT’S MAJORITY SLIGHTLY (REDUCED.

FIGURES SHOW A RECORD' POLL. A poll of over 92 per cent of the electors on the roll was recorded at the election for a member to. represent the'Waitomo electorate in Parliament, on the completion of the official count last Friday. This figure is exceptionally high for such a constituency as Waitomo, one of the largest in the North Island. The official count resulted as follows: W. J. Broadfoot (N.) ...... 4521 J. Jones (L.) 2995 J. H. Penniket (I.) 2341 Informal 65 Total 9922

The number of persons on the main and supplementary rolls was 11,113, sut removals before the election reduced the number of those eligible to *ote to 10,796. The percentage of voting given •above does not take into account the sotes which for various reasons were disallowed, and it is considered that actually over 93 per cent of those eligible endeavoured to record their vote. This would be a high figure ior a city, but for W'aitomo it is little short of "remarkable, and reflects the tremendous interest taken in the elections. The results previously announced k>v Waitomo were: W. J. Broadfoot 4286, J. Jones 2718, J. H. Penniket 2267, giving a majority to Mr Broadfoot of 1568. By reason of the consideration of the absentee, postal and declaration votes, and a certain modification in regard to the ordinary votng owing to the registrar exercising his discretion as to which were allowable, Mr Broadfoot’s majority has been reduced slightly to 1526. The absentee, postal and declaration votes allowed numbered 604 and .vere cast as follows: —

The official count of the voting on the licensing question is now proceeding. The percentage of 92 . votes. is, as mentioned above, exceedingly high, and was only beaten by Invercargill, 94.7, Mid-Canterbury 94.3, and Oamaru, Pahiatua and Wairau each 93 per cent. •

W. J. Broadfoot 181 36 10 J. Jones .. 220 18 13 5. H. Penniket 82 12 4 Informal .... 7 21 — 490 87 27
