THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
RUMOURED VISTT TO TE AWAMUTU. ONLY >A FEW MINUTES HERE. Ii is rumoured that the first visit of their Excellencies Viscount and Lady Galway to Te Awamutu will be paid next week, the date mentioned being on Wednesday, December 18th. According to report the Mayor, Mr G. Spinley, received a telegram to this effect on Wednesday or Thursday of last, week, and a meeting was convened for Friday evening last to consider a suitable reception. It is, of course, the Mayor’s prerogative to decide the proper procedure in a matter of public interest. -He has, apparently, in this instance withheld a public announcement until lie can have the guidance of the Borough Council tiiis evening. But if that is so, tiie convening of a meeting last Friday may suggest that Mr Spinley has regarded a duty of his public office as a personal matter and not as a matter of wide public interest. Apparently only a brief stay will be made at Te Awamutu, and the Gov-ernor-General has expressed a wish to meet the residents of the borough and neighbourhood. Their Excellencies are to visit Taranaki this week, arriving at Hawera on Friday, and next day visiting Eltham, Stratford, and the Dawson’s Falls mountain house. On Monday New Plymouth will be visited, and then follows a visit to Te Kuiti on Tuesday, with Waitomo Caves in tire evening, and the party coming to Te Awamutu on Wednesday.
