THE ELECTIONS
WELFARE LEAGUE’S ATTITUDE. (Contributed.) The Welfare League has for 16 years consistently opposed the Socialist objective of the Labour Party, but from the statement of Mr Savage since the election it appears that this objective is for the time being subordinated to a more general constructive policy.to meet the problems of the day. Mr Savage and . his party have now a majority in Parliament which will give them power to carry out the policy placed before the electors. The Welfare League, in common with all those who have opposed the Socialist objective, will co-operate and sympathise with these efforts whenever practicable. It is certain that the electors, by placing the Labour Party in office, have not declared for its Socialist objective of substituting State for private ownership, because that issue was definitely not before the people. As upholders of private owmersliip and enterprise the Welfare League will oppose its abolition, if such is attempted, but from Mr Savage’s statements this does not seem likely to happen. So long, however, as the party retains the Socialist objective it is clear that, sooner or later, the political issue in New Zealand will be between Socialism and private enterprise; party division must ultimately be on those lines. .; L . . -
