NEW GOVERNMENT
SEVEN "CERTAINTIES." It is expected that the new Labour Cabinet will be formally sworn in tomorrow afternoon or on Friday morning. Following the party caucus at Wellington yesterday, it is considered that the following are "certainties" for office: — Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage (Auckland West). - Mr Peter Fraser (Wellington Central). Mr Walter Nash (Hutt). Mr W. E. Parry (Auckland Central). Mr W. J. Jordan (Manukau). Mr R. Semple (Wellington East). Mr D. G. Sullivan (Avon). ' Mr H. T. Armstrong (Christchurch East). Mr W. Lee Martin (Raglan).
There are also grounds for believing that Mr W. E. Barnard (Napier) will either receive Cabinet rank as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, or also the appointment as Speaker, in succession to the Hon. Sir Charles Statham. The general view is that the post he does not fill will be alloted to Mr H. G. R. Mason (Auckland Suburbs). The choice for the remaining seats in the Cabinet, in the absence of any official information, is somewhat difficult, as there are members of the party with fairly equal claims for inclusion. However, it seems that the selection has been made from Mr E. J. Howard (Christchurch South), Mr R. McKeen (Wellington South), Mr F. Jones (Dunedin South), Mr P. C. Webb (Buller), Mr J. O'Brien (Westland), Mr F. W. Schramm (Auckland East), Mr F. Langstone (Waimarino), and Dr D. G. McMillan (Dunedin West). From this number it is also possible that the offices of Chairman of Committees and Government Whips have been, or will be, filled. It appears reasonably certain that the strength of the first Labour Cabinet will be twelve members.
