* TOPICS OF THE HOUR. JUBILEE BALL. (Our Resident Representative.) The Otorohanga Town Hall was crowded on Tuesday evening cn the occasion of the Jubilee Ball, promoted to augment the funds of the local branch of the Plunket Society. The function was considered to have been the finest plain and fancy dress ball yet promoted at Otorohanga. Visitors were present from almost all parts of the southern Waikato, and northern King Country. Some striking costumes were worn by both sexes, from Mae West to Robin Hood, and from Queen Elizabeth to an old English squire. Conspicuous among the prize winning impersonators were: Me_sdames Patterson . and Anderson (French pierrot and Queen Elizabeth); Miss Quinlan and Mrs F. Johnson (old-fashioned pair); Messrs Geo. Goldthorpe and G. H. Phillips (English squire and sergeant-major); lan Thompson (girl friend). Swift’s Orchestra provided satisfying dance music, whilst the supper arrangements were on a most generous scale. The considerable net proceeds of the endeavour exceeded the most sanguine expectations, and the object of the promoters has been generously supported. RABBIT BOARD. Mr C. A. Wilson has received the appointment of inspector to the Mangaorongo Rabbit Board. At the last monthly meeting notice of motion was given by the chairman (Mr W. McGill) to move at the next meeting that a general rate of 2d per acre be levied for the year ending 31st March, 1936. In agreeing to this members were unanimous in the opinion that the Board’s policy should lie in the direction of compelling ratepayers to clear their properties for the ensuing year. The secretary (Mr J. G. Wynyard) reported that the boundaries of the area were agreed upon and the regulations gazetted. WAITOMO POWER BOARD. The Wharepuhunga and Rangitoto outer areas are now gazetted to be within the inner areas of the Waitomo Power Board, and extensive reticulation for the supply of light and power will be put in hand forthwith. A considerable increase in the demand for electricity has recently obtained. The peak load for the quarter ending June 30th was 899 k.v.a., as compared with 778 k.v.a. for the corresponding quarter of last yeai\ The units bought from the Board were 1,004,512 as compared with 888,784 for the quarter under review last year. The official count discloses that 227 ratepayers voted for, and only 19 against the recent loan proposals of £20,000, thus indicating confidence irt the Board. SUCCESSFUL APIARIST. Mr Walter Nelson, who conducts extensive apiaries in the Otorohanga district, w?as again a successful exhibitor of honey at the recent Winter Show at Auckland. This honey secured first prizes for medium amber and light amber granulated class, and in two sections for comb honey firsts were also awarded. . This is the eleventh successive year that Mi;-Nel-son has secured the principal honours at the Winter Show. The bees are on various locations in the Otorohanga, Kio Kio, Mangaorongo and Otewa districts. LONG CYCLE EVENT. In the 28-mile cycle race last Saturday, promoted by the Te Kuiti Cycle Club, B. Rothery, of Otorohanga, was first home, off the 12rhinule mark. N. Peterson (4inin 45secs) was second and J. McCormack third. J. Irvine put up the fastest time —80min 40secs. PERSONAL.

Mr M. I. Drower is at present in charge of the Otorohanga branch of the Bank of New Zealand, during the absence of Mr A. C. Thompson, wno is absent on sick leave.

Mr Wi Berresford, for some years sole teacher at the Whawharua school, 4 wihich was recently destroyed by fire, ( has been appointed headmaster of the Hautapu school, near Cambridge. Mr Alex. Cockburn, of Otorohanga, was the successful applicant for a position with the Colonial Rubber Co., Auckland. There were 491 applicants for the position, from all parts of the Dominion. The selection is gratifying to Otorohanga, as his age is only 19, and his education was obtained at the local High School, where he gained his Public Service and Accountancy , Preliminary examinations. ' Mr Richard Bell, a prominent local builder and contractor, has been authorised to exercise jurisdiction in the recently-established Children, s Court at the Otorohanga Courthouse. Mr and Mrs W : . Moorman have returned to their Otorohanga home after an enjoyable furlough. Mr Christian, who has been acting stationmaster during Mr Moorman’s absence, has left for his new sphere of duties at Wanganui. Among visitors here during the week, are Mr and Mrs C. G. Knobloclc, of Waipawa, Hawke’s Bay. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL. The annual ball of the Southern Kawhia branch of the R.S.A., in the Marakopa Hall, was a largely-attend-ed and successful function. Mr and Mrs E. Mosley acted as host and hostess, while O’Rourke’s Orchestra provided pleasing dance music. The decorations in red, white and blue were outstanding, while a canopy forming the Union Jack was an attractive display. Extra dance numbers were played by Mesdames Heed and Phillips and. Messrs Hunter, Mosley and Coutts.
