THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD
HAMILTON-OHAUPO SECTION. Though it was indicated at the Waipa County Council meeting last Monday that it was improbable that the whole length of the Great South Road between Te Awamutu and Hamilton would not be completely sealed tor practically two years, it ■is refreshing to learn that the-work on-the formation for sealing the first section —that part from Hamilton to Ohaupo —has actually been commenced. • At present the Public Works Department is preparing the foundations for a culvert about a mile south of the Hamilton borough boundary, and the approaches are being excavated by a gang employed by the contractors for this section of the road, Messrs W. C. Goosman and Company.
At the point where the new culvert is being erected the road is being straightened to eliminate a dangerous corner. It is expected that work will soon be commenced on a deviation between the new culvert and. the borough boundary. The contract for this section of the road provides for re-forming and tar sealing to a point ■near the Rultuhia dairy factory. When the road is completed a number of sharp turns will have been removed, and the grade will be better.
