This, so it is reported, happened while delegates to the Master Carriers’ Conference were at a wayside town en route to Hastings. The two South Islanders were at the same hotel and one had a bottle of whisky. Not wanting his companion to see it, he hid it under the mattress when he thought he was unobserved. But the otbei’ fellow did see, and on his fellow traveller going to slelep, drank the whole bottle. Next morning the fellow started looking for the whisky. “What are you looking for? ” asked his companion with an innocent air. “ Nothing,” said the fellow.

“ Then you’ll find it in the bottle, old chap,” was the reply.
