OTOROHANGA COUNTY

LAST MEETING OF FINANCIAL YEAR.

The Otorohanga County Council’s last meeting ot the financial year was held on Tuesday, when Cr Walter Bluck (chairman) presided, and the following were in attendance: Crs V. W. Simms, W. Thomson, W. G. Kay, F. Potts, P. T. Crowley and W. I. Bowyer, with Messrs G. Jackson (engineer), and S. J. Fortescue (county clerk).

The unsatisfactory condition of loadometers purchased from the Main Highways Board, which has promoted correspondence between the Council and the Board, was the subject for considerable discussion. The Main Highways Board were asked to refund the £SO paid for the defective loadometers. The Board replied suggesting that they would have them adjusted and placed in perfect order, and in the meantime would loan the Council new loadometers free of charge.—Before the Council replied to this suggestion, the Board forwarded the new loadometers for the Council's temporary use. —It was decided to write the Board asking for the refund of the £SO paid for the original loadometers, or to leave the new ones to replace same.

Rates collected to date, in comparison with this time last year, show the following position: 1934, Honikiwi £691 4s Id (£535 13s 4d), Mangaorongo £1227 7s 7d (£IOB2 19s 4d), Te Rau-a-moa £1045 5s 5d (£1029 12s sd), Waipa £B2'4 2s 4d (£614 16s 7d), Wharepapa £950 19s 4d (£944 11s 8d). The figures for 1935 are in parenthesis. This shows a comparative shortage this term of £531 5s to date, but as the 12A per cent Government subsidy will induce many to make a special effort, to pay before the 31st inst., it is lioped that last year's total may bo exceeded.

The riding accounts, with the position of same early in the year, showing in parenthesis, are as follows: Mangaorongo £92 9s 6d dr (£227 0s 8d dr), Te Rau-a-moa £57 7s lid dr (£225 19s 5d dr), Waipa £165 19s 9d dr) (£ll6 Is 2d dr), Wharepapa £53 13s cr (£4ll 6s lid cr), Honikiwi £B7. 7s cr (£96 3s 3d cr). The Wharepapa riding has considerably reduced its credit balance, the reason being that the riding proportion of the debit balance of £385, plant working account of £l5O, has been transferred to the riding, making a total of over £250.

The expenditure out of the riding accounts, with the expenditure limit in parenthesis, was: Honikiwi £346 (£300), Mangaorongo £476 (£600), Te Rau-a-moa £355 (£450), Waipa £4Ol (£450), Wharepapa £503 (£830). The corresponding expenditure of last year was £353, £562, £323, £402 and £390 respectively. Thus there is no material change in Honikiwi, Te Rau-a-moa and Waipa, with Mangaorongo £B6 less and Wharepapa £ll3 more. The bank overdraft stands at £2737, whilst £1532 is due to the Council by the Unemployment Board, being moneys advanced in payment of relief woorkers.
