BETTER HERDS
ASSOCIATION’S JANUARY FIGURES. EFFECT OF LONG DRY SPELL. The January figures of the New Zealand Co-op. Herd Testing Association, Ltd., just released, make most interesting reading, for they afford comparisons with January of the two previous years, and when it it remembered that this year the whole of the Association’s territory experienced a particularly long spell of dry weather the figures must be accepted as decidedly gratifying, even though in every case the total is lower than for January, 1934. For instance, the average for the 99,809 cows tested during the first month of the present year was 565 lbs milk, 4.60 test .and 26 lbs fat, as compared with 1.12,088 cows tested a year ago with an average of 645 lbs milk, 4.62 test and 29.86 lbs fat, and for January, 1933, 105,721 cows tested, 623 lbs milk, 4.48 test and 27.93 lbs fat.
The best individual producer in the Association for January was a cow in the Waihi group which gave 103 lbs fat, and the best herd (22 cows in the Pio Pio group) averaged 47.13 lbs fat.
