OBITUARY
SIR HENRY BUCKLETON. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday afternoon of Sir Henry Buckleton, formerly general manager of the Bank" of New Zealand, at the age of 69 years. Sir Henry, who resided at Oriental Parade, died after a sudden collapse. In banking service since the 'seventies, the career of Sir Henry is in itself a history of Australian and New Zealand banking, and of the colonial development to which banking has been a mainstay. He joined the Sydney staff of the Bank of New Zealand on December 16, 1788, his salary being £SO a year. In 1891 he went to 'Melbourne as acting accountant, and in May of the following year he was transferred to New Zealand, being appointed accountant at Hamilton. Exactly a year later he became accountant at Auckland. After eight years in this position, he received his first managership, being transferred to New Plymouth. Sir Henry's next promotion was to the head office, Wellington, as acting chief inspector, in October, 1905. Returning to Auckland as manager in February, 1906, he remained in the north until February, 1920. While manager at Auckland he made a world tour in the interests of the bank, leaving in 1913 and being absent for 13 months. In 1920 he was appointed general manager in succession to Mr W. Callendar, his retirement being at the end of last year. Sir Henry was knighted in 1929. Sir Henry is survived by Lady Buckleton (a daughter of Mr W. A. Graham, of Hamilton), two sons, Mr R. G. Buckleton and Mr John Buckleton, of Wellington, and three daughters, Mrs A. I. Walker, of Morrinsville, Mrs M. Sharp, of Sydney, and Miss Jean Buckleton, of Wellington.
