TWINS AGED 88
UNABLE TO SAY WHO IS WHO. STORY OF CHRISTENING. Melbourne, November 7. Messrs. John and Thomas Mahoney, who claim to be Victoria's oldest twins, having celebrated their 88th birthday, are unable to say definitely which is John and which Thomas.
When they were christened they wore distinguishing ribbons round their arms, but after the ceremony these ribbons were accidentally removed.
Throughout their lives each has followed his inclinations. Thomas, or rather the one who has been known as Thomas loved to roam, and travelled round Australia working at construction camps and crowded gold diggings. John preferred the quiet farm at Thomastown, and from the old bluestone cottage, which still stands, he has watched Melbourne grow from a tiny village. "Hard work" is their recipe for a long life. "It never killed anyone," John adds.
John is living in Sutton Street, North Melbourne, and Thomas in Station Street, Carlton. Both are widowers. Their father, Mr. Michael Mahoney, came to Australia in 1837 from the North of Ireland, and helped to build the old Melbourne Gaol and the Melbourne Hospital.
