THE ABUSED POLITICIAN
"Hardly a day passes without some ignoramus, hoping, no doubt, to win applause from the gallery, heaping fresh abuse upon the head of the politician. No doubt there are in politics many whose sole object is to benefit themselves. But for every selfish politician there are probably at least ten selfish sportsmen. ' Playing for the side' is an admirable sentiment, but how many do more than pa<y lip-service to that ideal ? The majority of sportsmen, professional and otherwise, are out for what they can get. Their own interests come before those of 'the side.' Nor is this to condemn sport; rather it is tc condem,h those Who masquerade under the name of ' sportsmen.' No one will deny that sport, in itself is wholly admirable, nor that there are some who do;'credit to its name. The fact io is that sportsmen as a whotej are so short-sighted as to abuse'the very system, and the administrators of that system, which per,m|its them to continue 'their round of pleasure unmolested and free from the worries and cares that beset the sod'ety to which they nominally belong."—Sir Arthur Jenkins.
