TOPICS OF THE HOUR. TOWN BOARD MEETING. (Our Resident Representative.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Town Board was held on Thursday evening, the chairman, Mr F. O. R. Phillips, presiding, and the following Commissioners were in attendance: Messrs P. J. MeNamara, W. H. Culloy, H. Lawrence, A. P, Grey, V. L. Fairbrother, H. J. Greeashields, with Mr P. H. Gosse (town clerk and engineer) in attendance. The recent heavy and almost continuous rains of the past week have interfered with the works of the field rtaff, but has had the good effect of scouring out the channels a-nd removing the dust from the streets and gutters. Whilst the flood Waters from the Waipa will leave a considerable amount of silt on several roadways, to be removed, the major de-« posits will be beyond the confines of the town's boundaries. It was decided to lease the site of the rubbish tip to Mr Sowerby for seven years, at an annual rental of 10s, on condition that the tenant clears three acres per annum tint 1 the total area is cleared of weeds and scrub.

Mr W. J. Down was appointed sexton at the cemeterv..

It was decided to have the names on the Soldiers' Monument, on the corner of Ranfurly and Maniapoto Streets, re-lettered in gold paint. The Board will co-operate with the local Beautifying Society in planning out the current year's operations.

Arrangements have been made for the transportat'on of large stones in order to build up batters in Ranfurly Street and Kakamutu Road frontages, to the Memorial Park.

The engineer reported that the secondary roads in the township have been repaired, 56 cubic yards of metal naving been used. The pruning of hedges and trees nas been completed. The formation and metalling of various footpaths and streets have been satisfactorily concluded.

It was decided to procure a 25ft kauri pole for a new flagstaff at the Municipal Hall. The main highway (Maniapoto Street.) has been swept of all loo?e mingle chips, and is now in perfect order.

Mr J. Trapski, solicitor, submitted plans and specifications for a new picture theatre, in Tuhoro Street. These plans were carefully examined, as were the several specifications for the sanitary arrangements, none of which met with the entile approval of the Board. It was decided that plans 1 and 2 were not acceptable, as no septic tanks or flushing systems are allowed in the brick and concrete ;vrea. It was considered that No. 3 plan should be amended, and the Board will hold a special meeting on the 2Sth mst to finally consider the application. Matters in connection with the Town Band were discussed, embracing the band rooms and instruments, and the custody of same. The position of the present band was considered unsatisfactory, and it had practically ceased to function as a band. It was decided that Messrs Fairbrother and Lawrence go into- the affairs of the band-and report to the special meeting next week. It was decided to serve not'ees on the M'Uori Land Board -and M> H. Isaac, Otorohanga, that an old residence in Tuhoro Street will be demolished, as unfit for human habitation. The land is under the jurisdiction of. the Land Board, and the improvements belong to Mr Isaac. Similar not r ces will be served regarding a residential property next.the Roman Catholic Church, which was also condemned by the health inspector as unfit for human habitation. This is one of the oldest houses in Otorohanga.

A communication regarding water rates, on behalf of the headmaster of the District. High School, was left to the Finance Committee to finalise.

It was decided to spend up to £lO on improvomen?s and metalling, on Orahiri Terrace, near Milne's property.

It was decided that all water mains, at the dead ends, be flushed out once a fortnight. The foreman ''eported a small slip at the sp'llway of the town reservoir, and minor , wash-outs along .the pipe line. The reservoir is now filled to capacity, but the water is very discoloured as the result of the recent heavy rains,. Comprehensive improvements are < to be employedr.on the north eastern.. end of Ranfurly Street, where hedges and trees will be planted at once. Vr.e completed scheme will pract'cally be an enlargement of the Memorial Park.

An application by the town clerk, for an increase in salary, will be considered at the next meeting of the Board. It- was decided to leave the matter if the beautifying of Andrew's corner to the Works Committee, to complete the work commenced ' some months ago. - -
