PRINTING ACT
KILL TO CHECK PROPAGANDA
Important amendments of the Printing Act, in order to check the dissemination of Communistic and irresponsible propaganda, will be embodied in a bill to be introduced this session by the Chief Secretary Mr Chafi'ey (says the Sydney Sun)The provisions of the Act requiring a circular, pamphlet or handbill to hear an imprint, giving the name of the printer are to be extended to impressions produced by any multigraph pi - ocess. a It was held in a case before the High Court that typewritten or multigraphed publications were not "printing" within the meaning of the law. Under present conditions, therefore, poltical propaganda of a seditions or libellous nature can ho circulated in circumstances that make it difficult to trace the responsible person. Another amendment in the proposed bill will, it is understood, relax (ho law which compels a newspaper to announce the name of an individual printer and publisher. In the case of a properly constituted and responsible firm, all that will be required is that the imprint should bear the name of the firm.
