JUSTICES' COURT

SPECIAL SITTING AT OTOROHANGA. (Our Resident Representative.) A special sitting of the Otorohanga Court was held yesterday before Messrs Graham, R. • Bell, and P. JMcNamara, justices, when the following cases were heard:— CIVIL CASES. ■'•'■■; F. J. Bertram v. Charles Barton. Judgment for plaintiff for £4 15s; 2d, and costs £1 18s 6d. W. A. Henderson v. John Flint, claim £9 10s, and costs £1 12s 6d. E. V. Rhodes v. Hana Green, claim' £ls 2s 5d and costs £2 19s. O'torohanga County Council v. H. Goldthorpe, claim, for County rates. — George Goldthorpe appeared for the debtor (his wife), and asked for an adjournment, as his wife lived in an isolated district and could not at-tend.—-Mr F. O. R. Phillips, County solicitor, objected, and stated that rate cases could not be adjourned.— Mi{ Goldthorpe said he wondered why his wife should be sued, and hundreds of other ratepayers who were in default, should escape this attention.— Judgment was given for the County, for the amount of claim, £8 19s -Bd,. and costs 30s 6d. Same v. Leuschke, charged -With operating a motor-van on the Auek-. land —Wellington main highway at a speed of 31.8 miles per hou,.-., .thus exceeding the maximum speed of 25 •miles per hour.—Fined 30s and costs 20s 6d. '•'-'.' i =<>. Same v. A. N. Gerrand, charged with operating a heavy Hudson truck, at a speed of 38.4 miles per hour;.—; Fined £2 and costs 20s 6d. Murray Pratt (ranger to the Otorohanga Town Board) prosecuted Mrs Z. McColl, for allowing a cow to wander en the streets. Defendant ask.. ed many questions from the witness, Pratt, which caused considerable amusement to Bench, Bai;, and the people present. Fined 2s 6d and costs 21s. Same v. P. Govind, for a similar offence. —Ordered to pay costs 21s. Same v. Here Kingi, charged with allowing three horses to wander in the main streets. —Fined 10s and costs 25s 6d. Same v. R. Turner, wandering horses. —Fined 5s and costs 25s 6d. Same v. Rangi Moerua, wandering horses.—'Fined 2s 6d and costs 35s 6d. Same v. G. R. Ofrmsby, wandering foal (which failed to fellow its mother along the road). —Ordered to pay 25s 6d Court costs. Same v. Chafi-leis Sowerby, wandering cows (the first offence in'four years).—Fined 2s Gd and costs 20s 6d. Same v. R. Young, wandering cows. —Fined 2s 6d and Court costs 20s 6d. Same v. E. Merrin, similar charge. —Fined 2|s 6d and costs 20s 6d. Same v. Robert Page.—'Fined 2s 6d and Court costs 20s 6d. POLICE CASES. Police v.. Frazer, charged with operating an unlicensed wireless set at Otorohanga.—Defendant pleaded not guilty, and called evidence to prove that the set, which he was experimenting with, was never in working order to receive messages. Local post office officials gave evidence regarding a speech by George Bernard Shaw, being received by this particular ;set.—Defendant stated that all:ho heard of Shaw's speech was something about "free milk."—After much evidence had been heard the Bench dismissed the case as trivial, and ordered Frazer to pay Court cor>ts. Same v. C. Robinscn, charged with the theft, from J. Ogilvje of leaf tobacco, grown, locally.—Ogilvie estimated the value of the tobacco at about £3 on £4. The dried leaf was in a shed. The Bench fined Robinson £2 and ordered him to make good the less of the tobacco, valued at 255.
