SHOT AT GIRL

YOUNG MAN SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS. Newton Roy Hartman, 24, who was convicted at the Central Criminal Court at Sydney of having maliciously wounded a young woman, by firing a shot from a rifle at her, was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment. Mr Acting-Justice Markell, said that in the interests of society, persons who used guns indiscriminately, would have to be stopped. The maximum penalty for Hartman s offence was five years. However, he had been strongly recommended for mercy by the jury, and the judge also-took into account the fact that he had shown courage in the rescue of children from drowning in a river.
