ALL DRENCHED

EYOITED NATIVE WAS THE CAUSE. Amusing incidents marked the Visit of the liner Cathay to Christmas Island last week. Ah excited native steersman of the local launch ran the boat under the cold water gushing from the ship’s side, drenching the district officer and wetting the manager of the Phosphate Company and the women, but. all enjoyed the incident. When the Cathay thundered farewell the crew mistook the sound for an emergency signal and promptly donned their lifebelts and rushed to their places beside the boats, giving a remarkable exhibition of readiness and discipline.

The bewildered passengers followed suit. The loud unorthodox comment from the surprised commander on the bridge sent the crew scurrying back to work.
