SKIN-COLOURED COSTUME

A sequel to an official's objection to a woman's bathing costume was heard at Bridport recently, when Ivan Anderson, a company director, of Bristol, was fined £5 for assaulting James Gerrard, harbour master at West Bay, a seaport on the Dorset Coast.

Mr Gerrard said he saw Mrs Anderson on the beach in a bathing costume which was cut low at the back. The colour of her skin was practically the same as that of the costume, and from the Esplanade it appeared as if she was nude. He told her that the costume did not comply with the local by-laws, which specified that only the reg'tlation ones were allowed to be ■from.

On the following day he was accosted by Anderson, who said that it was his intention to deal with him for having insulted his wife. Gerrard denied havihg doi\© so, whereupon Anderson rained blows upon his face. Afterwards he told Anderson that he wished to keep West Bay decent. Anderson then asked if he wished to be further punished, and at the same, time landed him a severe blow between the eyes which broke the cartilage of his nose.

Anderson told the Bench that he asked Gerrard to apologise for what had transpired regarding his wife. This he refused to do.

Mr J. Roper (defending): Did he say something in justification of his conduct?—Yes, that he was going to keep the beach clean, and there was to be no indecency. He repeated the remark, and I lost my temper and struck him in the face, and said: "You have asked for it and got it." What did his remarks' convey to you?—That my wife's modesty was in question.

Phyllis Ajnderson, wifle of the defendant, said she had worn the costume for two seasons, and this was the first complaint she had ever received. She told the harbour master that his complaint was a ridiculous one.

tilling their fields with sticks, but it was evident that if occasion arose, they could be a formidable foe. Each man was equipped with and fearsome battleaxe with a beautifully finished, very keen edged stone blade, about nine inchese long. This fitted into a carved tail, and with a short handle, they were ingeniously held together by woven fibre. The natives, who affected much ornamentation, wore belts of bark, from which were suspended knitted fibre material at front and back.

BAN ON VILLAGE LIFTED. A ban which was laid on the village of Glade, near Tetowo, Yugoslavia, thirty years ago, has been lifted by the Bishop of Stoplje, at the request of the villagers. In 1903, when the village and neighbourhood were under Turkish rule, the then Bishop of Stoplje paid a visit to it and was received with animosity and abuse by the inhabitants, upon which he promptly pronounced a ban. Since that time innumerable misfortunes have oce.urred in the village, such as the burning of the church by lightning, destruction of crops by hail, cattle plagues, and devastation by the Komitadsehls on several occasions. _^.
