DOMINION’S BIRTHRATE
ROME SPECULATIONS. New Zea’and’s birth-rate, according to a report presented to Parl'ament. fell last year to the low figure of 17.01) per thousand of population. So the tendency oi. recent years, and one that is by no means confined to New Zealand, has continued and intensified. Fortunately the decline i? compensated by a fall in deaths to the phenomenally low rate of 8.02. Hence, if fewer are being born into New Zealand, fewer are dying, and the rate of natural increase is still comparative’y high by- comparison w'th other countries with high standards of living. If the trend continues New Zealand will not be able to claim that she is a young country, for as the years pass a higher percentage of her population is over middle age and proportionately there are fewer children and young people. This changing age-grouping of the population must also bring a changed outlook, ecnomically, politically and scc'ally. Age may confer wisdoni and experience, but equally may lack the youthful spirit of enterprise and adventutre, Will the access of prudence make up for the lost spice of rashness, and the calm consolation* of an acquired philosophy for the swift joy of living ?
