£IOOO JEWEL ROBBERY

International jewel thieves are suspected of being responsible for the recent theft of jewels worth mor e than £IOOO from a first-class sleeping car of a Scottish express at King's Cross station. They are the property of Mrs Pitts, the French wife of a Briton, who was on her way to her home at Kyle House, Kyleakin, Isle of Skye. Railway police have been co-oper-ating with Scotland Yard in trying to trace a gang which is believed to have followed Mrs Pitts from Paris. She had booked a sleeping compartment on the express, and when she reached King's Cross, her luggage, including an attache-case containing the jewel case, was placed in the compartment. Mrs Pitts left the compartment for a few minutes to book a table for a meal in the restaurant car. When she returned the attache-case was missing. Later a passenger reported finding in a lavatory the two missing cases. Both had been hacked open with a sharp knife. From the jewel case the thieves had taken a diamond wristlet watch, a diamond comb, diamond tiepin, pearl tiepin, turquoise tiepin and an emerald ring and 2000 French francs.
