PRICE OF SHEARING

HELPING PASTORALISTS.

The reduction of 2s 6d per 100 in the shearing rate and the proportionate reduction in other classes of labour covered by the shearing award are estimated to mean £50,000 a year to the pastoralists of the State (says a Brisbane paper). The decision of Mr Justice "Webb has given some encouragement to the industry, although the benefit would be off-set to some extent by the reintroduction of the wool classers, esperts, and grinders and engine-driv-ers' awards, which had been suspended since 1930, and by the re-introduc-tion of the statio nhands' award. These awards prescribed rates higher than those paid during the currency of the suspension of the award. The pastoral industry .was never more I in need of assistance than to-day, crippling taxation-and freights adding to the worry and anxiety of drought. Thus far there has ben no manifest outcry against the new rates, and there was an indication during the hearing of the application that a cut in the shearing rates was expected owing to the low price of wool.
