FOLLY OF STRIKES
ECONOMIC WASTE INCREASED. Describing the unemployment problem as being by far the most serious matter calling for solution to-day, Mr A. C. Mitchell, president of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, in his address at the annual meeting in Wellington on Wednesday, pointed out that the total of 73,000 registered unemployed did not represent the true position. It took no account of unemployed women or girls or of young people leaving schools. Mr Mitchell said: "When one realises that the vast majority of our unemployed rpeople are the victims of circumstances over which they have no control and are anxious and willing to work; that the measure of relief which can be afforded from the sources available to the board are such as to provide for a bare existence only; that the wives and children in many cases are denied many things which those in regular employment regard as essential to their wellbeing, it is hard to understand the viewpoint of those who deliberately go on strike rather than adopt constitutional methods for a redress of grievances.
" Such action can only tend to increase the present appalling economic waste represented by genuine unemployment of men, ships, plant, and capital.
