REVIEW OF LONDON POSITION. In their latest report on the dairy produce market, Messrs A. H. Turnbuil and Co., Auckland, who represent the London firm of W. Weddell and Son, Ltd., state that last month saw a steady improvement in the butter market throughout the United K ngdom, once the weak se lers had been | satisfied, and this improvement as I far as N.Z. butters are concerned j continued throughout July, London ! prices rising from 99s on the 2nd July i to 106 s on che 23rd Jmy. At this.stage Danish was selling at 121 s 6d in the United Kingdom, and with the peak of their season and Ottawa facing them there was heavy pressure to sell, and this, undoubtedly, caused uneasiness in the mind of buyers, with a consequent collapse in the prices of Danish which dropped back to 114 s 6d, and Ills dur ng the next two weeks. That New Zealand only weakened 6d per cwt during that period is a point for congratulation and was, no doubt, assisted by the fact that spot stocks are normal. On the other hand, afloats are heavy and in consequence, we cannot expect to do more than hold our own during the coming month. Gradings for 12 months show an increase of 7,180 tons of butter, or 7.40 per cent.

Stocks in New Zealand are considerably heavier than 'ast year, being 5475 tons on the 31st July aga'nst 2921 last year. This is undoubted y the result of the mild winter we have experienced freshly made butter being available in many parts, which have depended upon stored butter in previous years. Cheese has been somewhat disappointing, and although spot stocks in the Un’ted Kingdom have been short prices weakened. Consumption has been undoubtedly affected by the low values of meat of all descriptions. The warmer weather in the United Kingdom during July and August should, however, improve the consumption of cheese, and with a favourable statistica l position, the market ’s expected to firm up again. Gradings for the 12 months show but little a'teration as compared with last year being 88 194 tons, a decrease of 1035 tons, or 1.16 per cent. _ A regrettab’e feature at the present time is a serious complaint from Lon-

don of b’ack spot developing 'n some lof our coloured cheese. Samples have been returned to the Dominion, and as the matter is now being investigated by the dairy division of the Agricultural Department it is hoped that a solution of the mystery w‘ll soon be avai’able. In the meantime, the complaint has undoubted 1 y affected ' the price of N,ew coloured cheese generally. -
