From the elements avai.aoie in ordinary ground wa*er and tne carbon in the air it builds up its body. By reason of its unique power of utilising radiant energy from the sun it obtains carbon for the manufacture of carbo-hydrates and pro terns, borne carbo-hydrates can be made artificially, thougn not as the plant makes them; no proteins have so far been made by man.
