FEWER BRITISH BABIES

FGURES RECORDED STILL LOW. There are no signs of any improvement in the British birth rate. The final volume of the Registrar-Gener-al's figures for 1930, published recently, show that the rate for that year was 16.3 per 1000, equalling the figure for 1929. This was the lowest birth rate since the establishment of civil registration. At the same time the marriage rate was maintained at the 1929 level of 15.8 per 1000, the highest since 1921. Other highlights in the review are as follows— The population of the country i: growing older. Birth rates in other countries, except France and Japan, show a heavy fall in comparison with pre-war years. The British birth rate is lower than that of any other country except Sweden. During the last six years the number of fatalities caused by the motorcycle have been more than trebled.
