DAIRY FACTORIES
STATISTICAL FIGURES. Registrations of factories under the Dairy Industry Act as at March last, together with the quantities of butter and cheese forwarded to grading store during the year ended 31st March,, 1932, and the numbers of milk or cream suppliers to the factories during the same period, are reported by the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture as under:
Butter factories, 1931-32, 149; 193031, 147. Cheese factories, 1931-32, 263; 1930-31, 270. Dual plants,, 193132, 56; 1930-31, 59. Suppliers to butter factories, 1931-32, 51,407; 193031, 46,906. Suppliers to cheese factories, 1931-32, 12,539; 1930-31, 13,839. Butter for export, 1931-32, 99,548; 1930-31, 93.971 tons. Cheese for export, 1931-32, 83,299 tons; 1930-31, 90,960 tons. Butter and cheese factories in Auckland district number 163; in Taranaki, 122; Marlborough, 8; Westland, 11; Wellington 75, Hawke's Bay 27, Nelson 9, Canterbury 26, and Southland 87.
Whey butter was manufactured as a side-line at 85 of the above cheese factories in 1931-32,, the total quantity forwarded for export being 1422 tons. This is not included in the total amount of 99,548 tons of butter given in the table, which refers to creamery butter only. In the 1931-32 period there were also operating in New Zealand five milk-powder factories (two wholemilk and three skim-milk plants), seven casein factories, two 'condensedmilk factories, and one sugar-milk factory.
