TOPICS OF THE HOUR. ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Own Correspondent.) The statistics of business transacted during" the past quarter at Otorohanga Court are now available, figures for the previous quarter being in parentheses: Civil plaints entered 24 (41), distress warrants issued 2 (3), judgment summonses issued 9 (11), warrants of commital issued 5 (2), processes served by bailiffs 81 (177), procesess received from other Courts 94 (161); total amount sued for £4OO 12s 6d (£1321 18s Id); amount recovered £6Ol 7s 6d; sittings by magistrates 6 (6), by justices 5 (1), criminal or police cases: Charges heard 19 (16). Te Raumauku school, in the Honikiwi district, has been closed after functioning for 25 years, as there are now only five scholars. An interesting address was delivered here on Friday, under the auspices of the Farmers' Union, by Mr W. Phillips, of Auckland, chairman of the New Zealand Pig-marketing Association, and Mr N. W. Hastings, organiser and outside manager. Last year the Association handled 20 860 pigs, and the suppliers will receive a bonus on their advances. A large number of questions were answered to the satisfaction of those present. Rugby: United defeated Kio Kio by 3 to nil, Old Boys drew with Otewa 3 all, United defeated Kio Kio 6 to 3, Kio Kio A defaulted to United A. In a primai'y contest Te Kuiti boys defeated Otorohanga by 14 to 3, Honikiwi defeated United B team by a large margin, whilst in a practice elimination contest the juniors defeated the seniors by 30 to 12 after a splendid game. The Maniapoto players for the contest for the Ratana Cup, at Otorohanga on Wednesday next, will be chosen from Barlow, Hautonga, Turner, Hineona Weo Wetere, Kawe Coffin Trench, J. James, Kura, J. Rata, Yates, Taitoko, C. Wallace, Hetet, T. Wallace, C. Holden, D. Turner, J. Anderson, Roberts, Wilson Hetet, Tuke, and Harpur. In inter-school basketball contests at Te Kuiti on Saturday the Otorohanga A and Te Kuiti A teams drew, 7—7, Te Kuiti B defeated Otorohanga B, B—l,8 —1, Otorohanga A defated Te Kuiti A in the primary contest, B—7, and Te Kuiti won the B contest, 10— 8. In the Hangatiki-Qtorohanga game here Hangatiki were leading on points when heavy rain stopped play. The Otorohanga ladies' hockey team played Te Kuiti repreesntatives, with Mr T. Melville as referee. The visitors won by 4 to 2.

The local Golf Club was strongly represented at Te Kuiti on Saturday, but were defeated by 15 matches to 2. The B players met Te Kui:i B at Otorohanga, and results were, Otorohanga being mentioned first: N. Smith V. Hetet 3--2, K. Liddy v. Hansen 6—4, J. Johnson v.Bßrown- —1, A. R. Morley v. Powdrell 1 up, R. Lee v. Poidevan 3—l, C. Irvine v. Frerichs 3—2, Cooper v. McLeod 1 up, Cornfoot v. Cameron 3— 2. Mr H. A. Lurman, Rangiatea, was again the principal judge at Te Kuiti Winter Show, and he considered the display of root crops, field produce, and vegetables a splendid'section and a credit to the growers. Two new companies intend to work the limestone pits and bluffs in the vicinity of Hangatiki. Mrs A. Kennedy, of Tahaia, upon retiring from service as a teacher and headmistress of various schools, including that of Otewa, where she was appointed the first permanent teacher, was tendered a social farewell by the ladies of Whitford, her last teaching position. Mrs Kennedy was presented with a handsome antique vase and jardiniere. Valuable gifts were also made to her by the scholar? Rev. G. Budd, superintendent of home missions, was the preacher at the local Presbyterian Church last Sunday.
