WANTON DESTRUCTION.

Sir, —The felling of the large pine tree in the main street of Pirongia was an act of wanton destruction. Many a passing motorist, and many a tired horse, found welcome shelter there. The Waipa County Council seems to have abused its powers when it gave permission for one of the most useful and beautiful of the row of trees to be cut down, when a lopping of a few feet off the top would have amply served the purpose. These fine old _trees are a heritage and a landmark in Pirongia, and should not have been destroyed to satisfy a passing whim or an ill-thought idea.—l am, etc., TOM STEEL.
