SETTLERS FAREWELLED

PUNIU ROAD FUNCTION. j The settlers of Puniu Road assemb- | led last Thursday evening at the re- ! sidence of Mr and Mrs H. Murrell to j do honour to Mr and Mrs H. Ranson j and family, who are shortly leaving ' the district. There was a very repre- ! sentative attendance, and soon everyj body was enjoying a happy evening, I spent with songs, stories, dancing and I reminiscences. The younger folk i danced to excellent music contributed ! by Misses L. Murrell and Pat Mc- ; Carroll, and a Monte Carlo competi- | tion was won by Miss McCarroll and ’ partner, while a spot waltz found ! Miss R. Murrell and partner fortu- ; nate. Enjoyable contributions to the j programme were made by Messrs R. I Haliburton (recitations, "The Bush ] Christening’’ and "The Songster’s : Rest”), Id. Hughes (recitation „"A i Soldier's Reverie”) and G. Ross (song i •■Bonnie Charlie'’). A clever com- ; petition, of jumbled names, was won ;by Mrs; L. Murrell. A bountiful supper. provided and dispensed by the ! "invaders,” was much enjoyed, and ; Mr G. Ross called upon Mr G. S. ; Clarke to present Mr and Mrs Ranson I with a tangible token of the esteem jin which they are held. In handing i over a valuable carpet. Mr Clarke | said all who knew the Ranson fam--1 iiv regretted that they would be leav- ; ing the farm on Puniu Road to try : their fortunes elsewhere. Mr Ranson j had been a trier all the time, and Mrs | Ranson had been an able help-meet, : besides winning the esteem of every- | body for her many excellent qualities, i The family also were going to be j missed, for they had taken their part ! creditably in the community. All j joined in wishing the Ranson family ; the best of good luck for the future, i (Applause, and the singing of "They I Are Jolly Good Fellows.”) Later in I the evening, after a very pleasant rej union, the company heartily sang , Auld Lang Syne, and departed to their respective homes.
