"LEPERS ARE CLEANSED"
In half an hour at a lunch meeting held last month by the London Missionary Society at the Memorial Hall, London, Sir Leonard Rogers, that great friend of lepers all over the World—and he says there are more than 3,000,000 of them—said a great many interesting things about leprosy and the war that is being patiently waged against it (writes the London correspondent of the Guardian, Manchester). It was cheering to hear how greatly the whole outlook had been changed in the last ten or fifteen years, so that, as he said, as it was said nineteen hundred years ago, " Lepers are cleansed."
Not only are the early cases now cleansed, largely by the use perfected by Sir Leonard Rogers, with, the help of an Indian chem'ist), of the ancient Indian chaulmoogra oil renvedy, but very few of the more advanced cases are unaffected by the treatment. Sir Leonard IRogers (reported that threequarters of a million doses of the newest preparation of hydro-carpus oil had been sent out by the British Empire Relief Association to the colonies last year. Another fact to which he referred was that £50,000 a year had ben saved by ithe discovery in South Africa that uninfective cases—that is, cases of the nerve type of the disease, as opposed to the infective skin type—were being unnecessarily segregated. Some of the money saved by putting- this right was being spent now on research.
