COINCIDENCE?

A BROKEN CRUCIFIX. An extraordinary event caused the greatest excitement in a church popularly known as A 1 Riparo, in Cassino, writes the London Observer’s in that Italian town. A beautiful carved wood crucifix fell into pieces when touched by a woman named Domenica Picano as she falsely swore that she had refunded an old debt, claimed by the widow of the man who had lent her the money. When the widow asked for the return of the loan, which amounted to about £lO, Picano declared that she had repaid it long ago. and was ready to swear on the crucifix. The other woman accepted her challenge, and, followed by a large crowd, went into the church, where Picano pronounced a form of oath. No sooner did she put her hand on the crucifix, which hung over the altar in one of the side chapels, than it fell into pieces, causing Picano to faint with fear and the spectators to rush out of the building in a panic.

When Picano recovered her senses she confessed to having sworn falsely, and managed to return the money to the widow within a few hours’ time.
