FIRE FIGHTING
NEW LADDER WITH TELEPHONE A gigantic ladder fitted with a telephone by which the man at the base can speak to the man in charge of the water tower at the top, and thus direct his operations, was demonstrated for the first time to-day at the headquarters here of the fire brigade, writes a London correspondent. It is a remarkable turntable all-steel structure, which is carried on a petroldriven chassis, and it extends automatically to 104 feet. This is 20 feet higher than any fire-fighting ladder hitherto used in this country. It also carries a huge searchlight for night work, and complicated as its basic controls appear to the onlooker, the complete mechanism can be placed under the entire control of one man. The ladder, which was constructed by a Manchester firm, cost £2OOO, and I am told that two similar machines have been ordered by the'London County Council.
