OTOROHANGA NEWS

FATAL FALL OF EARTH. YOUNG MAN KILLED AT KIO KIO. (Our Resident Representative.) Whilst a young man, Eamie G. Sorgel, 19 years of age, was working with others, in a metal pit (on the late W. Ellis’ farm) near Kio Kio, at 11 a.m. yesterday, a fall of earth buried him completely. His mates extricated him expeditiously, when it was seen that he was gravely injured. Dr Gilberd was soon in attendance and sent for the ambulance to convey him to the Waikato Hospital. Deceased quickly sank, however, and died before its arrival. Sorgel is believed to be. an orphan—with relatives in Dunedin. An inquest is pending. Brought up, after remand, at the Otorohanga Court, yesterday morning, before Messrs R. Bell and W. I. Bowyer, J.P.’s., the two young men Joseph George Jordan and Leonard Andrews, of Auckland, pleaded not guilty to the theft of a sedan motor car (taken from New Plymouth on Friday evening), and guilty of taking two rugs and a ladie’s cardigan jacket from the car—where it was abandoned near Otorohanga on Saturday morning. Accused declined to enter the witness box. Jordan said he was a jockey, but had lately been at work as a house painter. Andrews stated that he had been an assistant in a store, but had not worked for the past three months. The bench sentenced both accused to one month’s imprisonment for stealing the rugs and cardigan. On the charge of the theft of the car, they were convicted and discharged. The stolen property was ordered to be returned to the owner. Shooting during the week-end, Messrs Murray Pratt (Otorohanga) and Howlett (Hawke's Bay) secured 43 duck, 23 phesants, and 40 Californian quail, the whole of the bag being in excellent condition. Other sportsmen report fair bags of duck and quail in the Mangaorongo district, and decent bags of phesant, duck, and quail in the Honikiwi and Hangatiki districts. Fair sport among phesants was enjoyed beyond the Waitomo Caves. The first Rugby contests here on Saturday attracted a record crowd of spectators. Kio Kio defeated Otewa seniors by 16 to nil. Otorohanga defeated united by 16 to 6. High School defeated United juniors by 14 to 3, and Otorohanga defeated Honikiwi juniors by 6 to nil. District farmers are now carefully tending their exhibition plots—in connection with the local A. and P. Association’s competitions. This season’s crops of swedes, turnips, mangels, ichou-moellier and carrots will be heavier and healthier than those of last year. Unusual interest is manifested in the election of the riding representatives for Waipa, and Honikiwi, on the Otorohanga County Council, and the partisans of the four candidates (2 for Honikiwi and 2 for Waipa) are working hard to secure the return of their selected candidate.
