monthly meeting. ’ GENERAL business dealt WITH. Cr S. C. Macky presided at the ordinary monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council on Monday, when there were also present Crs J. T. Johnson, A. H. Storey, G. S. Clarke, W. McGee, J. S. Fisher, R. G. Speake, T. Church, and A. Livingstone. '.“ Messrs T. Grant (clerk) and J. W. /Ciyil (engineer) were in attendance. Leave of absence was granted to Crs E. F. Peacocke and N. Reid. Subsidy on Rates.—The Public Works Department advised the payment to the credit of the County Fund Account of the sum of £4380 10s Id, being subsidy of 12£ per cent payable to the council under section 45 of the Finance Act (No. 4) 131. Received. Mutu Street Extension —Messrs Swarbrick and Swarbrick' forwarded

for execution by the council a memorandum of transfer from Mr G. M. Ahier to His Majesty the King, for the purposes of a public road, of 2 roods 25.3 perches, being all land on deposited plan No. 23922. Allocation of Heavy Traffic Fees.— The Hamilton Borough Council forwarded a statement showing the allocation of heavy traffic fees from the pool together with a cheque of £498

16s 6d, representing the Waipa County , Council’s share.—Received. , Hospital Board Loan, £15,000. — The secretary, Waikato Hospital Board, advises that the board at its last meeting resolved to apply to the local Government Loans Board for

sanction to the borrowing by way of overdraft of the sum of £12,000 for the purpose of redeeming the debentures in connection with the Building Loan, 1930, repayment of which is to be made by way of levy and subsidy during the financial years 1933-34, 1934-35, 1935-36, 1936-37, by equal instalments of £3OOO. The effect of the

proposal will be that instead of the [ board having to pay £IO,OOO during the next financial year, the sum of £3OOO only will be required to be

paid, i.e., £ISOO by levy on the local , contributory authorities and £ISOO subsidy. Before formal application is made, the concurrence of the council in the proposal is sought.—Approved. Highway Estimates.—The board’s representative on the No. 2 District Main Highway Council forwarded for the information of the council a copy of the construction estimates for the year 1931-32.—Received. Engineer’s Conference.—The N.Z. Society of Civil Engineers advised that the general annual meeting of the N.Z.S.C.E. will be held in Wellington' on the 23rd February, 1932, and asks the favour of the council’s assistance by granting such facilities as lie in the council’s power to enable the engineer to take part in the proceedings. An invitation is extended to any members of the council who may care to attend the conference.—Received.

N.Z. Financial Times.—The secretary, N.Z. Financial Times, forwarded a copy of the Times and solicited the patronage of the council to the establishment of a financial paper in New Zealand. The annual subscription fee is £1 Is.—No action taken. Road Classification. Mr H. A. Johnson, on behalf of Motorways, Auckland, applied for permission to run occasional trips during the summer month from Auckland to Waitomo Caves with a motor-coach, the laden weight of which is 6 tons. Application states that the Government Tourist Department has specially reduced its charges at the Hostel so as to encourage business and with the same object in view the minimum fare proposed from Auckland to the caves has been fixed at 15s.—The request was unanimously refused, the opinion being expressed that Waitomo is well served by railway, and there is no need for heavy charabancs that , -vwill damage the county roads. Te Rapa Pound.—Mr F. Waters advised that unless the council can make some small allowance he cannot see his way clear to continue to act as poundkeeper. His losses on stock impounded during the past twelve months amounted to £l7, as most of the stock is deliberately turned on to the roads by people who have found them useless, decrepit, and valueless. —lt was decided to make a payment of £lO per annum. Proposed Drainage District.—Four ratepayers in the Rukuhia riding requested the council (p take the necessary steps to have a drainage district comprising their properties constituted under the provisions of the Counties’ Act.—Deferred, i Papesch’s Road.—Mr Jos. Papesch requested permission to erect a convenient gate across a road on the Puniu River side of Papesch’s Road which is used only a very little by the public visiting the river during the summer. Owing to the growth

of noxious weeds the road is at present almost impassable. In consideration of the council granting the request applicant undertakes to clear, plow, and grass the land.—Granted, provided a hinged gate is erected. Telegraph Poles.—The Post and Telegraph Department advised that it is the intention of the department to replace existing 25ft. poles on Norton, Tuhikaramea, Whatawhata and Killarney Roads, such poles to be placed about 9ft. 6in. out from the fence linos. —Referred to engineer. Damage to Telephone Lines.—The telegraph engineer, Hamilton, advised that on the 26th November, as the result of cut growth from the roadside being burned under the bronze wire, a break occurred in the department’s circuits on the OhaupoCambridge road. As he understands clearing was undertaken by relief workers he would be glad if the council would have instructions issued to

the men not to light fires under any circuits as the heat from the fires causes damage necessitating the spans of wire being replaced.—Referred to engineer. Petrol Pump.—Messrs Moses Bros, applied for permission to instal a petrol pump on the kerbside at their store at Parawera.—Referred to riding member and engineer. Townsend’s Road Bridge.—Messrs Dalgety and Co., on behalf of Messrs

J. H. Earl and A. H. Griffiths, forwarded a cheque of £SO representing a contribution toward a permanent bridge across the stream to give access to the property of Mr Griffiths. Pirongia Wharf Road. —Mr T. Bardsley, who has a section adjoining Wharf Road at Pirongia, requested permission to use the road conditionally on his clearing same of blackberry and gorse.—Referred to riding member and engineer, and a shed on the roadway is to be offered at the next Pirongia stock sale. Derelict Road. —Messrs Swarbrick and Swarbrick, on behalf of the Pirongia Domain Board, asked the assistance of the council in the closing of a derelict road, and the vesting of the road when closed in the Crown as part of the Pirongia racecourse. The Domain Board is prepared to pay the cost of closing the road.—Agreed to. Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Flat Road.— Mr Bygrave requested permission to lay an inch pipe line across the Kihikihi flat road near his property. He undertook to dig the trench as narrow as possible.
