LAWN TENNIS.
TOKANUI CROSS-ROADS CLUB,
The weather on Saturday last was ideal for the “working bee” convened for the purpose of renovating the Tokanui Cross-roads tennis courts preparatory to opening the season on Saturday afternoon next, and now the courts are in splendid order, being in consonance with the neat lawns and gardens of the school adjoining. Everything points to a successful season, and the executive confidently expects that the membership will exceed last season’s total of 42. Last Sauturday evening the Club held its second annual meeting, which was well attended. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr L. N. Gaiie; president, Mr A. S. Wyllie; vice-president, Mr Wm. Old; secretary, Mr H. Howcroft; treasurer, Miss S. Old; committee, Misses F. Halligan and M. Howcroft and Messrs H. Wyllie and C. Andrews; handicappers and selectors, Messrs H. Howcroft, C. Andrews, and H. Wyllie. The chairman, in his annual report, referred to the popularity of the progressive tournaments, and the three inter-club matches held during the year. The two “ ladders ” also provided many enjoyable sigles matches. It was decided this year to have, in addition a combined, ladder competition, thereby enabling ladies to challenge the gentlemen. In thanking the executive and members for their co-operation during the past season, Mr Wyllie particularly mentioned the secretary, Mr H. Howcroft, who, he said, had been the “ live wire ” of the club since its inception.
