KIHIKIHI NEWS

- HOUSE WARMING. (Own Correspondent.) A large gathering of friends and relatives assembled at the residence of Mr D. Ashby to welcome him into his new home on the evening of Monday last. Among those present were some of the now few remaining of the /old pioneer settlers of Kihikihi, while school-mates had come from several of the outlying portions of the district. Needless to say, such a meeting of oid friends called forth all manner of reminiscences, and a very joyial air prevailed throughout the evening. Cards, community singing, huiriorous stories, vocal solos, and an elocutionary item kept all present fully entertained. After a most appetising supper had been dispensed, Mr J. Hutchinson, on behalf of those present, washed Mr Ashby success and happiness in his new home. The speaker said that both Mr Ashby and he were sons of pioneer settlers who had been closely associated in the past, and in a few well-chosen remarks he referred to the sterling qualities of the forebears and family to which Mr Ashby belonged. Mr Hutchinson complimented - the contractor on the success of his work in building the new house, but jocularly remarked that there seemed to be lacking one important thing to make it a complete home, and he hoped that they would all assemble again when that matter was put right. Mr Ashby thanked Mr Hutchinson for his good wishes, and assured all present of his pleasure in seeing them in his home. He appreciated the kindly remarks regarding his parents, whose example he hoped to follow in life, and concluded by again thanking all his friends and schoolmates for their kind wishes. During the evening Mesdames Kay and G. Maunder were most attentive hostesses. A happy everiing concluded with the singing of “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” and “ Auld Lang Syne.”
