GIVING HIS LIFE

- QUOTES JEWISH PROVERB IN HIS WILL. “ What you give for the cause of charity in health is gold; what you give in sickness is silver; and what you give after death is lead.” This old Jewish proverb is quoted by Nathan Straus, a former American storekeeper, in his will, issued recently. He w;as a rich man, but his English estate is proved at only £1231.

Mr Straus left £20,000 to his employees, and in quoting the Jewish proverbs he adds: “ Many of the rich do not even give lead. I have always lived up to this proverb, particularly in connection with the charities I initiated. I have all my life drawn whatever I could out of business, and devoted it to the prevention of poverty and sickness, and make no specific charitable provisions in my will.”
