BICYCLE IN JAPAN
The bicycle in Japan is extremely popular, and is put to every imaginable use, not so much for recreation or as a means to save fares, but practically entirely for carrying goods both cheaply and quickly. Every description of merchandise, large or small, heavy or light, is transported by the Japanese on his carrier. Cyclists in Japan have practically a free hand, go at, terrific speeds, often, balancing a parcel or dish of food on tehir heads, and with big loads on the carrier behind. Roads and highways in Japan are extremely narrow, and it is extraordinary how the cyclists manage to wriggle in and out of the traffic without more accidents than actually happen every day. Ofter the breadth of the article on the earner of the bicycle is much greater than the breadth of the machine and out of all proportion to the bicycle’s proper carrying capacity.
