PRINCE MISSED HIS PUTT
“ Clubman,” in the London Sunday Dispatch, tells the following diverting story of the Prince of Whies at golf: One year it was announced that the prince proposed to spend his birthday quietly by playing a couple of rounds of golf at Sunningdale, in Surrey. This he did. The owner of one of the houses fringing the course had let it for a month or two. The hobby of the temporary tenant was not golf, but wireless. He brought to his temporary home a set with a thunderous performance, and he chose that afternoon for its opening performance.
In the midst of the uproar the prince’s ball arrived on the seventeenth green, and stopped about 10 feet from the pin. The green was barely 200 yards from the house of melody. As the prince strode across the green the music suddenly stopped. There were six solemn buzzes. In the midst of this welcome lull the prince proceeded to settle down to his critical putt. As he drew back his club a metallic voice announced, with awful distinctness: “The Prince of Wales is spending his birthday quietly to-day by playing golf at Sunningdale. That was more than flesh and blood could stand. The putt was a failure.
