TOPICS OF THE HOUR. (Our Resident Representative.) The local veterans journeyed to Te Kuiti on Saturday last to contest the Boles Cup with Te Kuiti veterans, and an exciting bout resulted in a win for Otorohanga by 14 to 11. The Otewa and Otorohanga seniors played on the local grofind and Otorohanga won by Bto 3. Kio Kio defaulted to Honikiwi. High School defeated Otewa juniors by 5 to 3. A good display of basketball was witnessed at the local school grounds when the Kihikihi girls defeated the Otorohanga A team by 6 goals to 4. A district farmer, Mr Robert Young, committed suicide at noon on Saturday by cutting his throat. Deceased was 51 years of age. and came from the Tuakau district about three weeks ago. , He was a native of Scotland, and leaves a widow and three adult sons. An inquest was held the same evening, when a verdict of death by suicide, caused by mental depression, was returned. Mrs Howley, a very old and respected resident of Otorohanga, died on Sunday evening, after a considerable illness. Her son, Mr M. Howley, is a prominent business man here. The second round for the president’s trophy engaged the attention of lady players on the local golf links on Saturday last. The results were:—Mrs Leigh, 98 —26—72; Mrs Hitchings, 107—32—75; Mrs Morley, 105—30—75; Mrs Craig, 111—36 75; Miss Hitchings, 103—26 —77; Miss McKerras, 115—36 —79; Mrs Cowern, 111—32 —79; Mrs Hotson, 107— 28—79; Miss Corboy, 116 —36 —79. The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Margaret, the second daughter of Mr and Mrs C. B. Hobson, of Te Kura, Otorohanga, to Norman Price, third son of Mrs Jack and the late Mr N. P. Jack of Mount Eden, Auckland.

Many units of the dairying herds of the district are coming again into profit. All dairy cattle have apparently come through the trying winter period in good style for the new lactation period. .
