ELEPHANTS STAMPEDE

FRIGHTENED BY TRAFFIC. Five elephants disturbed the traffic in the old part of Berlin recently between the hours of 11 and 3 in the morning. They objected strongly to motor omnibuses and to the trains of .the elevated railway, from which they sought comfort in the neighbourhood of the 18th century Monbijou Palace.

They took four hours to cover the short distance from the good railway station, where they arrived, to the Busch circus. They showed an immediate distaste for the traffic on leaving the station, and bolted when an omnibus passed them. Their keepers recovered control of them at Monbijou Platz, only a few hundred yards away from the circus, and chained them ip the trees. At one o’clock at night it was hoped that the streets were sufficiently clear for their delicate nerves, and they set out again. The rattle of a train over their heads sent- them flying back again with loud trumpetings, which greatly alarmed the passers by. Finally the police closed the neighbouring streets to traffic, and their keepers managed to coax them into their stables.
