WAIKATO'S DRAWN GAME WITH CANTERBURY.
In an even and exciting game at Christchurch on Saturday afternoon the Waikato hockey representatives drew with Canterbury in the challenge for the New Zealand Shield, with two goals each. Following were the respective teams: —
Waikato: Goal-keeper, G. Jack; fullbacks, T. A. Ewan (captain), L. Spiers; halves, T. Finch, R. Munro, J. Harefield; forwards, F. O. Civil, A. G. Rogers, B. Spiers, J. Davies, G. Finch.
Canterbury: Goalkeeper, H. Snooks; full-backs, E. Dash, C. A. Rogers; halves, C. Hore, H. Hore, B. Rogers; forwards, F. Forman, D. McCormick, S. Bell, T. Turbitt, F. Fullwood. '
Waikato attacked early, having the better of the first twenty minutes' play. B. Spiers (Waikato) then shot a fine goal, McCormick equalising for Canterbury before half-time. Canterbury played much better in the second spell, but Waikato resumed the lead when Spiers scored again. Canterbury then made a desperate effort, but Jack effected a great save. Just on time Turbit made a brilliant effort which equalised the scores, and Canterbury thus retained the shield in a great game. It was an exciting finish. The Waikato backs, Ewan and Spiers, played splendidly, stopping and clearing in great style. Jack, the goal-keeper, played a wonderful game. Harefield and Munro, the halves, gave a fine exhibition of play. Spiers, Finch, Davies, and Rogers combined well in the forwards with clever stick play. Hore and Turbitt were the best of the Canterbury players.

ALL BLACKS AND OLYMPIC GAMES. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A bulletin from the New Zealand Hockey Association concerning a hockey team for the Olympic Games at Los Angeles was received at a meeting of the Wellington Hockey Association last evening. The bulletin stated that as the cost of sending athletes to the next Games would be about £l2O per man the Olympic Council could not hold out any hope of sending a hockey team, but would consider the question of giving financial assistance. Hockey at the Games was a knock-out competition, and as hockey players might not compete in any other branches of athletics, the expense involved would hardly be justified in view of the possibility of having only one game. It was considered that much better purpose would be served by encouraging visits from such teams as the Indian Army team. It was thought this would give the game a much greater boost than sending a team to the Olympic Games. At the moment there did not appear to be much prospect of a New Zealand team visiting Los Angeles.
