PIRONGIA

(Own Correspondent.)

With the regularity of a hardy annual the flu has become a regular winter visitant and there are a great many residents down with it just now throughout the district. A thorough canvas of the district has been made by the Farmers' Union organiser, the result being an appreciable increase to the ranks of the union in this district. The deadly apathy of the average farmer to his union it seems has at last been removed, so much for the depression. The return watch between Kihikihi and Pirongia basketball teams resulted in a win for the former by 11 to 10. . . Persistent rumours that it is the intention of the Government to bring in a block of several hundred acres close to Pirongia has been going the rounds for some time, the block in question is Crown land and is in close proximity to several other blocks of unimproved native and privately owned land. The scheme as rumoured is to be carried our by unemployment relief labour under the supervision of the fields division of the department of agriculture. While much of this land is rough, very httte is unworkable and several farms already established on this class of country speak volumes for its possibilities as good grass country. It is to be devoutly hoped that there is something in the rumour as few will question the value of worn of this kind in point of value to the state or the individual. ______
